In 1873 Winchester introduced the Model 1873 that used . 44-40 WCF (Winchester Center Fire) cartridges, which became known as the gun that won the West. From 1883 John Moses Browning worked with the Winchester company to design a number of rifles and shotguns.
If it says 30WCF on the barrel it was made before 1942 (WWII). If it days 30-30 on the barrel it was made after WWII. Winchester can tell you the production date if you provide them the serial number.
History. Most individual manufacturers habitually put serial numbers on the weapons they produce. Such numbers can be used to ascertain the name of the manufacture, place and date of manufacture. At least for some manufacturers, a serial number can unlock myriad details about the weapon.
In 2013, Winchester brought back the Model 1873, manufactured under license from the Olin company by FN/Browning in the Kōchi Prefecture of Japan by the Miroku Corporation. It joins the Model 1892 and Model 1894 as the third classic Winchester rifle model to be reintroduced.
Winchester “One of One Hundred” Model 1873

Winchester manufactured a total of eight “One of One Hundred” Model 1873 rifles, only six of which are reportedly known to collectors. The company announced the Model 1873 “One of One Hundred” in 1875, and they were all shipped between April 1876 and April 1878.

In fact, two of the most famous Winchester model firearms in history, are the Model 12 shotgun and the Model 70 bolt-action rifle. Once billed as “the perfect repeater,” the Model 12 was Winchester`s first hammerless pump-action shotgun.
The new technology included a spring-closed loading port on the right-hand side of the frame, directly at the rear of the magazine tube, and resulted in the first reliable lever-action repeating rifle, produced as the first Winchester, Model 1866.
The Winchester Model 1300 shotgun first appeared in 1978 as an `economy` version of the 1200 and ultimately took over the pump shotgun line for Winchester in 1981 when the 1200 was discontinued.
The Model 94 was produced continuously by Winchester from 1894 through 1980 when the production of the gun was taken up by the U.S. Repeating Arms Company, which made the Model 94 until 2006.
30-30 was among the first cartridges utilizing smokeless gunpowder. It was introduced by Winchester in 1895 in its Model 94 lever action rifle which was the product of famed gun designer John Browning. Shooting a 160-grain jacketed bullet at almost 2,000 feet per second, it was a speed demon at the time.

All were all dropped from production by the original Winchester company over half a century ago. Each of these models was reintroduced by today`s Winchester Repeating Arms Company at some point beginning in the 1990s. All are in production today. All are made in our partner factory in Kochi, Japan.
The Winchester company of the 1960s had experience with building the Model 101 in Japan. The 101 was a fine over and under and was well accepted by gun writers and the in the marketplace. At this point, the decision was made and the plan came together naturally.
The Winchester Repeating Arms Company was a prominent American manufacturer of repeating firearms and ammunition. The firm was established in 1866 by Oliver Winchester and was located in New Haven, Connecticut.
The longevity and special features is one big reason Winchester firearms have high valuation above other manufacturers to this day. Lot 1025: Exceptional Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine.
Winchesters were very good weapons — Evolved from the 1860 Henry rifle, Winchester rifles are considered among the earliest repeaters. No gun of the period shot more often or as reliably as did the Winchester.
The Benelli M4 is the proven king of combat shotguns. This gas-operated, semi-auto shotgun was evaluated by the Marine Corps in 1999 and joined the ranks shortly after. The fast-firing design makes follow-up shots quick and effective, making it a terrifyingly effective close-quarter`s weapon.
Winchester SXP: Final Thoughts

The Winchester SXP Defender is a solid, entry-level 12 gauge shotgun with plenty of after-market accessories to take it to the next level. Given its combination of reliability and affordability, I would recommend at least checking it out, if you are in the market for a new shotgun.

The most common type of shotgun used for this purpose is the manually operated, slide-action/pump-action type like the Remington M870 or Mossberg 590A1. The latter is currently the pump-action of choice for US armed forces, and both have seen service with other militaries.
His pride and joy was the revolutionary Winchester repeating rifle, one of the first guns to fire rounds repeatedly, taking away the cumbersome need to stop and reload. The Winchester became an icon of the American frontier – used by cowboys, Native Americans, outlaws, sheriffs and even President Theodore Roosevelt.
The shotgun`s initial production run from 1931 through 1960 yielded approximately 30,000 guns. Winchester Repeating Arms Company ceased the main production line of this shotgun in 1960 and the Model 21 was sourced to the Winchester Custom Shop until the gun`s retirement in 1991.
In fact, the first Model 12s to hit the market were 20-gauge guns although 12- and 16-gauge offerings came out in 1913 and the 28-gauge debuted in 1934. The Model 42, a . 410 version of the Model 12 that`s light and nimble, was built in 1933. Be careful with early Model 12 guns.
The Winchester M1897 was the most common trench gun in World War I. This Winchester shotgun was not the first pump shotgun but was the first to achieve widespread acclaim. The gun was invented by John Moses Browning.

I have a Winchester Model 190 with serial number B1302781. This model and serial nubmer does not show up on the Windhester site. Can you tell me when this rifle was manufactured?
ANSWER : The model 290 came out first, in 1965. The 190 came out in 1967. The 290 was made until 1973 and production of the 190 ended in 1980. There were approx. 2,150,000 model 190/290 made through the years.Since yours was made before the middle of the production run, and before 1973, I would guess late 60’s to around 1970 or 1971.

Hope this helps.

The following is Wisner’s rendition & info on the subject.
The difference in the old firing pin and the new one is as follows. The old replaced
style, was totally lathe tuned (round). While the new recall style is similar in lathe
turning on the front and back, but in the front midsection it has two flats milled, one
on each side. This makes the center section stronger. Also replaced is the bolt sleeve
lock pin (firing pin guide) which was made to accommodate this different shaped firing
pin
Part number for the new parts are, firing pin =1391ND, bolt sleeve locking pin =1491ND
The word was at the time this recall was in process was that if the firing pin would
break at the mid section and still remain in the gun as two pieces, the possibility of a
premature discharge before the bolt was locked was possible. This apparently was caused
by the firing pin tip (now not having a retracting spring) to be stuck forward, and
thereby slam-firing upon chambering.
The responsibility for the recall apparently was on Olin, as they were the parent company
at time of manufacture. Olin set up regional recall centers at three established US
gunshops. There was a manufacturing delay in the replacement firing pins, and a backlog
occurred, also some collectors did not like the idea of shipping their guns long
distances. Olin then also authorized other gunshops to make the required alterations.
Upon completion of the recall, the shops were to test fire the firearm and to stamp an
assigned letter on the inside top of the receiver as seen thru the magazine well with the
bolt retracted. The letter “B” represented Bolsa Gunsmithing, “L” was Lefever, and “N”
was for Nu-line Guns. The letter “X” apparently was for all the other independent shops.
However this identification information did not get communicated to some of the smaller
shops at the start of the project. The only way to tell if the gun as been modified, if
the ”letter” is not present, is to take the barrel & action out of the stock, remove the
trigger guard assembly and the try to rotate the firing pin by twisting it. If it does
NOT rotate, then the firing pin recall HAS been performed.

I have a Winchester Mod 1893 12 Ga shotgun that i inherited from my grandfather that was his father’s. I’m trying to figure out the manufacturing date of it. The serial number is A186XX. Is there any way I can figure out which day and month it was manufacture?
ANSWER : You may have to a little Google search, but at one time Winchester had a site where you could check the manufacture dates. If that fails, take it to a reputable gun dealer or gunsmith. I suspect the gunsmith may be the better of the two.
