We bought a house with a basketball post and hoop set in concrete. It is in great shape except for the fact that the top of the column must have been loose and water filled the column (over many years?). In any event, it rose, froze and cracked the post open. It is still very stable but I want to do something to save it now before winter sets in. Can I fill the column with cement up the ‘tear’ in the metal? How do I close that gap (about 3/4” wide at the widest and 3” long so that I can get the rust off around it and paint it with rust protection?Any advice much appreciated.
Experienced athletes share their insights in answering this question:
This pole should have been capped off to start with, but you can fill it,then you can clean of outside and put sleeve around it,be sure to cover each end by about six inches and that should take care of the problem.

How to Identify and Resolve Common Issues ?

We offer a diverse range of insights on identifying and resolving common problems in sports. Our sources encompass academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays shared by seasoned athletes. :

The better long-term option is to dig the pole out from the ground. This is a labor-intensive task that involves digging 2.5 to 3 feet under the surface to pull the pole from the ground without leaving behind anything. Next, they`ll remove the concrete surrounding the pole with either a sledgehammer or jackhammer.
If you have a basketball pole pad on your basketball hoop, bring it indoors for the winter. If you leave your basketball hoop out in the open for the winter, you can cover the hoop and net with a trash bag and secure the bag with duct tape.
To repair a broken portable basketball hoop base, heat is widely regarded as the best method. Then, in order to repair the crack, sand the base and then flame it in the crack spot. The patch layer is built to withstand sandbars or other interferences in the water.
The concrete takes 3 days to cure in warm temperatures, so when the mercury begins to drop, the curing process can take significantly longer. Additionally, if the ground is frozen, it`ll be almost impossible to dig a hole.
If you can dig around the post with a regular shovel or spade, you can loosen the post`s foundation. The trick is to dig out soil from one side of the fence. To get maximum leverage, you`ll need to dig further than the base of the post. This will allow you to tip the post and extract it by lifting.
If you live in an area with cold winters, the water in the base could freeze and expand. This can cause the base to crack. To avoid this, add a small amount of nontoxic antifreeze. You can also empty the base and store it indoors during colder months.
So the basketball suffers from under-inflation and from a leathery, not-very-bouncy skin. If you cool a basketball to low enough temperature, its skin will freeze and become brittle.
Luckily, small concrete cracks are simple to fill using masonry filler or similar products. Hairline cracks can be remedied using a vinyl concrete patching compound.
Therefore, I recommend (and we recommend in our instructions) to use sand. Sand is denser and heavier, and filling the base with sand creates a much more stable pole and backboard. Some of you may be concerned that using sand makes the system extremely heavy to move. You are right, it does.
The general rule of thumb is to use one 50-pound bag of cement per square foot. So, for a basketball hoop that is four feet wide by six feet tall, you would need six bags of cement. Concrete must be used as a firm foundation for an outdoor basketball goal.
What Is the Best Tool to Break Up Concrete? The best tool for the job depends on the thickness of the concrete and your level of strength. A sledgehammer and pry bar are best for thinner slabs, while a jackhammer or chipping hammer works better for slabs over 3 inches.
Generally, for large infrastructures, the lifespan of modern concrete is about 100 years if properly maintained.
Yes you can install in existing concrete. There are a couple ways to do this. 1) Use epoxy concrete anchors – hammer drill into your concrete and mount to the manufacturer`s specs. You will want to make sure you are far enough away from the edge of concrete and that the existing concrete is thick enough.
If you find you`ve stepped in cement, slowly pull yourself up and avoid contact between your skin and the cement whenever possible. If your bare skin has been exposed to wet cement take immediate action and call for medical attention if necessary. Stepping in cement can be funny, but it may also be dangerous.
How can I winterize my basketball system? In sub-freezing weather, use 2 gallons of non-toxic antifreeze or completely drain the water if sand is not used.
While concrete offers a satisfying basketball bounce, the surface has very little give and can be harsh on players` legs and ankles. Concrete surfaces also pose an increased risk for concussion. Asphalt can tear up basketball shoes, skin and the basketball itself.
Place the basketball pole in the hole and use a level to make sure it`s perfectly vertical. Then pour Fast-Setting Concrete into the hole, just four inches below ground level. You`ll need those four inches for the next step: pouring water inside the hole to saturate the concrete.
A) The Base Gel/water gel will freeze at temperatures below 32 degrees F (0 degrees C) and will return to a firm, stable gel as temperatures rise above 32 degrees F. Base Gel`s performance will not be affected by repeated freeze-thaw cycles and will last up to 7 years.
On a cold day, the pressure inside the basketball decreases (Gay-Lussac`s Law). Since the pressure of the gas inside the basketball is lower, the impact with the ground has less effect on the restoring force. The basketball does not bounce as high as it does in a warm room.
As the temperature decreases, gas molecules move closer together. This causes them to move around more slowly with less energy. Thus, lower pressure leads to a lower bounce of the ball. That`s why a fully-inflated ball might appear deflated if the temperature drops dramatically.
Cracks in concrete are common and they develop when stresses in the concrete exceed its strength. Cracks are often caused by normal shrinkage of the concrete when hardening and drying.
If the concrete has deteriorated so much that the repair will only fix part of the problem, a full replacement is necessary, no question. Where the decision becomes a little more grey is when a repair will solve the issues of your cracked, flaking or worn down concrete but the problems will surface again quickly.
Concrete repairs typically last for about ten years, which means you should pay attention to any cracks or other signs of aging on your concrete surfaces if you want them to stick around for a while longer. You can make some DIY fixes with an epoxy sealant or by resurfacing it with new concrete.
Mud jacking can lift a settled concrete slab by pumping a grout through the concrete and pushing it up from below. The process is sometimes called “slab jacking” or “pressure grouting”. 1 to 1 5/8th inch diameter holes are drilled through the sunken concrete block/slab at strategic locations to maximize lift.

I have a multifunction sports watch that i bought from Big W, (no brand name)

By accident i set the watch to 24 hour time, originally it was set to 12 hour time, how do i set it back? ive tried every button combo including the button combo i used when i accidently set it on 24 hour time, the instructions only say how to set the time and date, it doesnt say how to toggle between 12 hour and 24 hour time, is there a generic way to toggle it on sparts watches? btw, holding the mode button in does nothing on my watch, no matter how long i hold it in for

ANSWER : Hi. How may buttons do you have, 3 or 4 buttons?if you have the 4 buttons, try this:You need to go through the time and date settings again. The 24 and 12hr format select is at the end of time/date adjustment. To set the time and date:-press the top-left button then right-top button to set the seconds, press bottom-left button to set hour then press top-right button to adjust hour, press bottom-left button to set the minute then press top-right button to adjust minute. To set date, press the bottom-left button then press top-right button to adjust month, press bottom-left button then top-right button to adjust day and finally press bottom-left button to set the time format then press top-right button to select 12hour format. Press top-left button when done.Since you have a generic sports watch, it is hard to write specific instructions to set the time format. If your watch has different ways of setting the time, just remember that the 12/24hour format is usually at the end of time and date adjustment.Let me know if you have questions. Good luck.

My basketball hoop broke and I have a pole cemented in the ground. Can you buy just the hoop/backboard itself and attach to the pole or do I have to cut the pole and start over?
ANSWER : Sorry I know nothing about basketball but it seems a crying shame to cut down the pole even if you can’t find a replacement hoop and board.

I have faced many similar things and I find remembering the wise old saying “in order to get the right answer it is important to first ask the right question”…

I suggest you ask around those who should know such things – the coach at the local schools, local teams. If you don’t get satisfaction then why not ask your local repair shop or fabricator if they can make what you need at a reasonable cost.

Spalding 66355 basketball system
ANSWER : Usually these are manufactured with either a flare on the end as you describe, or the entire length of the pole tapers slightly. If this is not the case, my guess is that you received 3 of the same pole piece, and it was mis-packed at the manufacturer.

Hot tub won’t stay at set temperature
ANSWER : I have a 2002 Infinity 6 man spa that I just got from a friend. I am also an Electrician. I had to replace the Spa pack because it wasn’t working. Once I replaced the Spa Pack and used the tub it got up to temp no problem but once I got in the temperature slowly dropped and it couldn’t keep up. After some research and discussion with a pool tech I found out that there is a jumper on some spa packs. It is a LC (low current) / HC (high current) jumper. It limits the current (amperage) that your tub draws. If you are running it on the LC setting it keeps the tub at low current by not running the heater when the jets are on. (this way it keeps the current low by running one only at a time) If you set it for HC it will allow high current to be drawn and let the heater and the jets be on at the same time. On my spa pack it is P26 Jumper. I have found it is also listed as Jumper 4 on some spa packs. the jumpers are located in the lower right of the circuit board. Make sure you shut off the power to the tub and know what you’re doing before you attempt changes. you can also google “Gecko Spa Pack Service Manual” and you will find the manual for your tubs spa pack. Good luck.
