Another top reason for leaks from the carb fuel overflow is a stuck carburetor float. The carb float works to regulate the flow of fuel into the carb bowl through a simple mechanism. But if it gets stuck in an open position, fuel will keep pouring into the bowl to the point it overflows through the fuel overflow.
A “flooded engine” simply has too much gas in its cylinders, so the spark plugs can`t ignite the fuel-air mix. It can happen for a variety of reasons — most commonly, because you pumped the accelerator pedal too many times when your engine hadn`t been started for a while.
It can happen for several reasons: it may be due to clogs in the air filter, poor compression on the cylinders, or problems with the carburetor itself. A faulty carburetor can also cause fuel vaporization, which builds up in the overflow chamber (or bowl), inundating it.
However, carburetors do last longer than fuel injection systems and are favored in motor sports. Carburetors are also much simpler to install than fuel injection systems, because there are no electrical components or return lines to the fuel tank.
Too much fuel in the air/fuel mixture can make your vehicle surge, sputter, or even stall. For example, if the carburetor is set way too rich, it will push enough gas through to the combustion chamber and flood the engine. Your engine power might lag if the engine is being flooded while you`re driving, as well.
Signs that Your Car`s Engine is Flooded

Smelling gas: If you smell a gas-like odor, this could be a sign of a flooded engine. Emission color: If it is a darker smoke, this could also be a sign that your engine is flooded. Trouble starting: Your car might have trouble starting up if the engine has excess fuel.

Heat can cause the fuel in the line to expand and be forced past the needle and seat causing flooding. Also fuel can boil inside the carburetor as the result of improper or missing gaskets or spacers between the carburetor and the intake manifold.
On a vehicle with a carburettor yes if the pressure is too high. On fuel injected engines the fuel line has a pressure regulator so unlikely with high pressure. However injectors can get worn and leak and nothing to do with the pump.
This bad habit is threefold – driving too fast, accelerating too quickly, and stopping too suddenly. All three of these actions lead to high fuel consumption. Where possible, you should accelerate slowly and drive with the speed of traffic.
Low tyre pressure, dirty air filters, overloading, and poor driving habits are just a few of the many reasons why your car`s fuel economy can suffer. If you`re a seasoned car owner, you may be able to diagnose and fix some of these issues yourself.
A hole in the motorcycle`s fuel tank can cause gas to leak everywhere. Holes in gas tanks can form due to rust or wear and tear, explains Motorcycle Habit. Humidity can also increase the chances of holes forming. Don`t weld or use a filler on the tank, warns Motorcycle Habit, as it may cause an explosion.

An engine that`s getting gas and not starting probably has a flooded carburetor or cylinder soaked with gasoline. Often your nose can make the diagnosis: Flooded engines reek of unburned fuel. Park the mower on level ground, and wait about 15 minutes for the gas to evaporate.

Tightening the screw increases the amount of fuel, while loosening decreases the amount of fuel. When making any adjustments, it is also important to make them in small increments of a quarter turn. This will prevent any major fuel changes that could dramatically affect the performance of the engine.
A fuel injection conversion replaces a carburetor with a fuel injection system. There are fuel injection conversion kits that make the entire process very easy. Older cars have carburetors, but electronic fuel injection (EFI) offers greater fuel efficiency and improved performance.
To check fuel delivery, remove the fuel line where it enters the carburetor and use a length of rubber hose to direct the flow into bottle or similar container. Fuel should pulse out in strong spurts if your engine is equipped with a mechanical fuel pump (electric fuel pumps are more of a steady stream).
Gas leaking from the carb overflow is common when a bike sits for long periods of time. Gas can come out the carb overflow when the bike is tilted. This is most often caused by a float that is set too high in the carb bowl. Incorrect float height will also affect jetting, so you need to fix this right away.
If you overfill your tank, it can cover the vapor intake hole with liquid gas, which can then be sucked into the charcoal canister. This can damage the canister and possibly other parts of the system, which will cause the car`s check-engine light to come on and could potentially cost hundreds of dollars to repair.
A wet spark plug likely means that it hasn`t been firing due to engine flooding or a bad ignition cable. Dirt or moisture on the outside of the spark plug that provides a conductive path to ground, or an internal crack in the spark plug`s ceramic insulator that shorts the plug to ground also can be the culprit.
Engine backfiring usually indicates flooding from the carburetor on older cars. Sometimes the needle and seat in the carburetor stick and cause it to flood fuel into the engine.
The simplest causes are that the wrong grade of petrol is being used (usually of too low octane ), the spark plugs are faulty or of the wrong grade, the carburettor is badly out of tune, or the ignition timing is faulty.
The tell tale sign that your engine is flooded is that you turn on the choke and pull the cord but nothing happens. In fact all that happens is you smell gasoline. Traditionally a good fix has been to give the carburetor time to completely dry off and this usually takes 15-20 minutes.
Coolant is passed through a small dead end on the backside of the single carb Honda shadow. This is done not to cool the carburetors, but to heat them. The idea is to prevent the formation of ice in the carburetor throat as fuel is evaporated.
If the regulator is malfunctioning, your engine may flood with fuel or cause decreased gas mileage.

I have a 1996 yamaha wave venture 1100….ran greatsat for 2 yrs..started but only ran for spray into carbs….drained fuel started and ran good. Started about month later and would only run as long as primed with starter fluids…checked fuel filter(ok)…fuel flow to fuel pump ok…output of fuel pump appears ok….but engine will only run as long as starter fluid/gas is sprayed into carbs. I don’t think it’s the carbs as it ran great a month ago…now it’s starving for gas flow….so it appears to be a fuel delivery problem…what would be the sequence of tests up to tearing into the carbs? is there a fuel filter inside the carbs? remember it fires off great when primed…until the fuel spray is consumed…

My 1977 Evinrude 140 HP outboard engine looses power when it hits @4,200 rpm’s and goes down to 3,500 then back up to 4,200 and then back down to 3,000 or about there. This would continue if I didn’t slow down to 3,000 on my own. It runs fine at @ 3,000 when I slow it down. I have changed all the fuel lines from the fuel tank to the carbs, removed, cleaned out the fuel tank, put new gas and added a can of SeaFoam. I replaced the water seperator filter and cleaned the fuel filter. I feel the fuel pump is operating OK. Any ideas about what could be causing my problem? Could it be a bad power pack or stator? Help!!

2005 4 stroke yamaha 150 550hrs. normally use every week but due to surgery not used for 10weeks. Just before I went down I changed internal fuel filter, and zincs in motor. finally put in sunday. motor started fine left dock hit the power and started to come up on plane then stuttered and died. changed the external fuel/water seperator pump up the primer and started up again. with in a minute died down again. limped back to dock checked fuel filter and plug wire connections. pumped up primer and left dock went right onto plane for maybe 150yds then coughed and died. I could pump up primer and it would run but then die out. the fuel filter at the front of the engine would run dry until I pumped it up again. If it were a car I would suspect a leak in a fuel line but I can’t find any sign of one.
before we launched I put 10 gallons of fresh fuel in and added another bottle of ethanol stabilizer (CRC brand)
what proceedure should I follow to isolate the problem? I am a fairly competent mechanic as far as cars and trucks go. I don’t really want to have to take it to a marine mechanic.
ANSWER : This is going to be the fuel pump is not pumping any fuel. The primer is acting as a fuel pump. When you prime it, it gives the engine enough fuel to run for a little bit. But as soon as the fuel runs out, the engine is dying. So this is going to be a bad fuel pump.

I have a Husqvarna 570 that quit running, It idled for about 30 sec. and shut off. It has spart and the plug is wet, its getting fuel. Had the ignition tested and fuel lines. checked fly wheel and timing. Seems like it is getting too much fuel and after a few pulls fuel runs out of the exhaust?

Sounds like you have dirt/debris in your carburetor jets or fuel passages but for sure under your inlet needle valve. This problem will cause fuel to come out of the exaust, and carburetor at times.
Follow the directions below and you will be able to get your Husqvarna 570 running again.
Make sure you are using fresh fuel…and oil mix if your using a two cycle mower or weedeater with the oil to the right mixture and not too much oil as it can cause hard starting.If the mower/weedeater is over a couple of years old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit,because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.Sounds like you will need to clean the carburetor or replace your carburetor internal rubber parts like the diaphgram and O rings.I recommend that you use a laquer thinner type cleaner to clean and dissolve the laquer build-up in the float and needle jet passages.Be sure to remove all plastic and rubber parts before using the laquer thinner because it can dissolve the plastic parts and render them unuseable.Be sure to use compressed air to blow out all the fuel and air passages.Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or using starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets,but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.Keep in mind that the float (if you have one) for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instructions you get with the carburetor kit.When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws.But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper.That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their orginal position before you started.Once you have your carburetor rebuilt and reinstalled that should solve your problem.

ANSWER : Sounds like your carb is dirty inside. make sure its out of warranty first, (don’t want to void it), then pull off the bowl at the bottom of the carb and clean it. Try to avoid useing acetone based cleaners as this can sometimes ruin some seals/gaskets/components.

LX 188. Engine suddenly dies. The fluel in the bowel of the fuel filter is empty. If I crank the engine the filter becomes dry and is collapsing some but the engine does not start. When I remove the supply line from the fuel pump to the carberator and crank the enginge there is a strong stream of gas being pumped out. I tap on the carberator ??? is the float is hung not allowing fuel to enter. Cranking the engine with the line off refills the bowel of the gas filter. Reattache line to the carberator===engine starts. Ran perfect for 20minutes then suddenly died. Repeated all the above and engine again started. What to do to fix this? Thanks
