How to Identify and Resolve Common Issues ?

We offer a diverse range of insights on identifying and resolving common problems in sports. Our sources encompass academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays shared by seasoned athletes. :

A backboard shattering (also known as backboard breaking or backboard smash) is an accident or stunt in basketball. It occurs when a player performs a slam dunk with sufficient force to shatter the tempered glass of the backboard, often causing the hoop to break off as well.
Acrylic basketball backboards tend to be even more shatter resistant than glass. The thickness of the acrylic can greatly affect its performance and price. Thinner acrylic can momentarily give under the pressure of the basketball, which can change the angle of the rebound.
Shaquille O`Neal was by far the strongest player in the NBA, and as a result broke many backboards over his lifetime. In fact, Shaq broke so many backboards that he had a monument installed in his backyard to commemorate all the backboards he broke.
Plexiglass sheeting is unique in that while it is extremely difficult to shatter, it can be broken, however, it doesn`t break into a thousand tiny, dangerous shards.
A dull blade will fight against the material, potentially causing cracks and breaks—not to mention an overly rough cut edge. Keep the blade cool. As mentioned earlier, an overheated blade on a power saw can also cause plexiglass to crack and break during the cutting process.
Shattering the backboard in a game of basketball is a rare occurrence. It can also be extremely dangerous, sending shards of glass flying over the players and fans. It`s a stunt that has caused games to be cancelled or delayed, serious injuries and expensive clean-up costs to be incurred.
“Suppose you just have a little attrition on the screws, a big guy could still be strong enough to push it over the edge.” That explains why Michael Jordan only has one broken backboard in his resume of carnage.
Acrylic is another clear option for basketball backboards. This material is more commonly known by the brand name Plexiglass. Acrylic is essentially a clear plastic material. Unlike glass, acrylic backboards are much more forgiving when it comes to vandalism such as rock throwing, etc.
Comprised of 3/8″ thick UV-resistant acrylic permanently attached to a heavy-duty welded steel tubular uni-frame with struts for added board support.
In 1993, Shaq damaged the entire backboard structure with his heavy-duty dunk during his rookie year with the Magic. This was his first rim-breaking dunk against Phoenix Suns that forced the NBA to introduce a new structure for the backboards after the infamous `Shaq Attack`.
The springs in the Snap Back NBA Basketball Rim are factory set to “Break” at approximately 180 to 200 pounds of force. This pressure can be field adjusted by the installer up to 230 pounds.
“The rule against hanging on the rim calling for a technical foul and a $100 fine will be applied to any player whose contact with the rim and/or backboard causes the backboard to shatter.
In general, plexiglass is going to be a little less expensive than safety glass, weighs much less, and can also help reduce glare. It`s also incredibly strong, taking about 10,000 pounds of pressure per square inch (psi) to shatter.
Is Acrylic more durable than Plexiglass? The extensive manufacturing process used in plexiglass makes it more durable than acrylic because it involves the reaction of acrylic within glass panes that makes a cell.
Typically a 1.25” thick Acrylic sheet such as Plexiglas SBAR will stop a 9mm bullet as tested by UL. 752 Level 1 test. To get increased stopping power, it is necessary to increase the thickness to 1.375”.
How strong is plexiglass? As a rule of thumb, plexiglass is about 30 times more impact-resistant than glass, but how does that work in practice? To be able to answer this question properly, we first have to look at the types of load that a material can undergo.
Is it still possible for an NBA player to break the backboard/rim on a dunk? Backboards are much stronger and better reinforced than they were in the past. Shaquille O`Neal was by far the strongest player in the NBA, and as a result broke many backboards over his lifetime.
Polycarbonate Backboards

Polycarbonate is the strongest of the materials and is practically shatterproof. Backboards made out of Polycarbonate materials limit how much the ball bounces after missed shots.

It seems impossible to believe, but there was a time when basketball largely forbade the dunk. From 1967 to 1976, high school and college players were outlawed from slamming the ball through the rim.
In 19 seasons played for six teams, O`Neal broke an unofficial 12 backboards, two of which came during NBA games. As some have alleged, Shaquille O`Neal had some fun with all of the hoops he broke over the years, collecting them to make a tree.
It is possible for someone who is 5`6″ to dunk, but it`s considered less common and more difficult than for someone who is taller. A standing vertical jump of around 32 inches is considered the minimum required for a person who is 5`6″ to dunk.
Take the plexiglass adhesive and carefully fill in the crack with the needle of a glue syringe. Use as much adhesive as necessary to fill the crack and wipe away any extra with a clean cloth. Allow the adhesive to set according to the directions on your chosen adhesive.
Any player whose contact with the basket ring or backboard causes the backboard to shatter or makes the ring unplayable will be penalized in the following manner: Pre-game and/or halftime warm-ups—No penalty to be assessed by officials. During the game—non-unsportsmanlike conduct technical foul.
Devcon`s Super Glue with cyanoacrylate is a general-purpose adhesive that provides a fast, strong, and permanent bond to almost any non-porous surface, such as plastic, rubber, metal, glass, and other materials.
