70 hp Johnson is hard to start the first time but starts good the rest of the day. Seen to flood out on first start.
Experienced athletes share their insights in answering this question:
Could be the choke isn’t closed all the way for the first start. Then when warm the motor doesn’t need to be choked.

How to Identify and Resolve Common Issues ?

We offer a diverse range of insights on identifying and resolving common problems in sports. Our sources encompass academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays shared by seasoned athletes. :

Make sure the engine is primed with fuel and choked properly at start if necessary. Improperly connected spark plug wires can make starting your engine difficult. Make certain all spark plug wires are properly connected and free of breaks. Also, check that the distributor cap and rotor are functioning properly.
Dirty or damaged spark plugs make it difficult for your engine to crank. Inspect your spark plugs and replace any spark plugs that are broken or dirty. If the spark plugs in your marine engine are improperly gapped, this can also prevent your boat from starting by delaying engine combustion.
In general a 2 stroke should not be hard to start, BUT when they are a common problem is a wet or oil fouled spark plug. Have a spare plug ready to swap out in case. use better 2 stroke oil that is mixed at a leaner ratio also to avoid oil fouling.
A difficult start could be due to a number of things, from a dying battery to a faulty starter. But if your vehicle has a hard time starting after sitting for just a few hours, it can cause an extra layer of confusion. When this happens, one of the most common causes is low fuel pressure.
Common signs include reduced engine performance, black smoke coming from the exhaust, backfiring, overheating, or hard starting.
Running the engine without a water source for any length of time will cause damage, so you`ll need to attach a hose to the motor`s water intakes. Some newer motors have built-in attachments that accept a hose nozzle. If your motor doesn`t, you`ll need a set of motor flusher muffs.
Generally, a 125cc two-stroke or a 250cc four-stroke dirt bike will suit a beginning rider better than something with more (unnecessary) power. Avoid the biggest motor 450 Motocross bike, because these will be too powerful for a beginner.
Five Steps to Starting an Older 2-Stroke Outboard Engine:

Squeeze primer bulb till firm. Advance throttle in neutral to 2/3s. Turn key on, push to choke (or pull out choke) and crank at the same time. Release choke, return the throttle to neutral after ignition.

If the heat riser is stuck in the closed position it will cause excessive heat under the carburetor and boil the fuel causing flooding and hard starting when the engine is hot. 3. When there is excessive fuel pressure. Excessive fuel pump pressure can be caused by a defective or worn out fuel pump.
The main reason for your outboard engine not working will be the fuel system, often because fuel has been left in the engine over winter. The fuel goes through a chemical reaction producing ethanol, which will prevent the engine from running. There may also be dirt blocking the filter, lines or carburettor.
Engines with no spark or intermittent spark on one bank can be caused by a faulty stator. Nestled in with the stator under the flywheel is the trigger (or timer base).
No. A battery is not required to run the rope start models. However, if you have electrical accessories you want to operate and would like to take advantage of the charging system, the capability is already there.
If the carburetor is supplying an air/fuel mixture that is too rich, the engine may tend to load up, foul the spark plugs, run sluggish and lack power.
Note: Never start an outboard motor without a water supply—it must either be in the water or connected to a hose providing water. Water lubricates the vanes of the rubber water pump impeller, and running the motor without a water supply for even a few seconds can damage or destroy the impeller.
Boat builders must ensure that installed outboard engines and engine control systems have start- in-gear protection . The engine or control system must have a device that prevents the engine from starting when the engine is in gear .
How many hours do boat engines last? Well-maintained inboard engines, inboard outboard engines (unless diesel), and outboards have a serviceable, average life of about 1500 – 2000 hours. If you`re looking at a gas-fueled marine engine close to or exceeding 1000 hours, inboard or outboard, proceed with caution.
Because combustion takes place with each revolution of the crankshaft with a 2-stroke, this format puts out more power than a 4-stroke engine and the power has more instantaneous delivery. This are some reasons why 2-stroke engines have a long history of use on many different types of motorcycles.
While 4-stroke engines perform well and generally last longer than 2-stroke engines, 2-stroke engines are lighter and faster than 4-stroke engines.
There are twice as many power strokes in a single stroke engine when compared to a 4-stroke engine. The two-stroke engines are quicker to accelerate because they can complete their combustion cycle in almost half the time when compared to a four-stroke engine.
Cold temperatures affect the chemical process inside the battery and reduce its ability to hold a charge. It also thickens engine oil, increasing friction in the starter motor and forcing it to work harder.
The 250 exhausts you quicker both physically and mentally, but if you can swing it, a ride on the 250 2-stroke prior to a showdown on the 450f can actually make you a better rider and more competitive on the track.
A 125cc two-stroke or a 250cc four-stroke is great for a beginner; riders who weigh less than 150 pounds can handle bikes under 250cc, while larger riders will need the suspension found in 250cc models.
If by “exhaust” you mean “silencer” then the answer is no, no damage will be done.
Although 2-stroke engines are easier to maintain, they run hotter and take much more abuse. Also, their oil lubrication isn`t as thorough as that of 4-stroke engines.

1985 40 hp Johnson outboard wouldnt open up and
ANSWER : Sounds like your mix is off and it’s fowling the plugs. probably too rich. make sure the level in your carb bowls isn’t too high. Really sounds like you should clean and bench set your carbs. Especially if a plug change helps but doesn’t last, then it’s got to be your fuel mix, or maybe timing.

I have a problem with my machine, on occasion, not recognizing when I’m starting, and the display will not start. I have to remove one of the batteries or it will stay on forever. When it starts up, it works fine, no complaints whatsoever. But lately, I’ve not been able to use it due to the start-up problem. I put the batteries in, the display comes on, but it will not start up when I begin motion. The control buttons will not work, either. Please inform me what it is I can do to fix this problem. Thank You
